Hey everybody!
We will NOT be having officer elections tonight. Instead, we’ll be doing Drag 101. We will be holding officer elections next week, so if you interested in running, review the positions under “Constitution”, prepare a 3 minute speech, and be prepared for a 5 minute Q and A session as to why you want to run, think you would be good in the position, what Lambda means to you, etc.

Project Condom: Season 2

Student-designed and student-facilitated, Project Condom promotes positive sexual health decisions and breaks down myths and stigmas about condom use. Designs are created out of condoms and judged for their creativity and incorporated sexual health message.

Latest American Outcasts: Stories of Immigrants in Athens

The LGBTQ community is among the many groups that are targeted and treated unfairly under America’s laws. Immigrants are under attack right now and GLOBES stands in solidarity with them. We want to bring an end to all forms of discrimination. The Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition (AIRC) is coming to campus to raise awareness about Georgia’s recent Arizona copycat legislation (House Bill 87), as well as the federal Secure Communities program. These laws will lead to increased racial profiling and the criminalization and deportation of honest, working people, creating fear in the larger immigrant community. House Bill 87 and the Secure Communities program further enable a growing climate of ethnic and racial tension that creates divisions. Athens Immigrants Rights Coalition will share their stories and provide information about what you can do to help during this time. There will be free pizza.
LaCage Meeting

Also, the committee will discuss the goals for the year and give more details about LaCage. Town and Gown theater is holding auditions for “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” “Hedwig” is a cult classic rock opera about a trans rock star’s road to self-acceptance; a really great show. The roles of Hedwig and Yithze have already been cast.

LACAGE is Lambda Alliance Committee Advocating Gender Equality, a sub-committee of Lambda dedicated to eradicating cissexist polices at UGA, starting with the addition of gender identity and gender expression to the non-discrimination policy. They are having their first meeting this Tuesday. Reverend Renee DuBois of Our Hope Metropolitan Church will be training us in non-violent protesting methods. This little sub-branch of Lambda has potential to do a lot of good in this community and become a welcome voice of activism. Come out and support!

Gender Transcender: The Life and Times of Jo Calderone

The LGBT Resource Center will be hosting. a discussion of gender through the lens of pop culture. We will touch on the differences between Lady Gaga and her alter ego, Jo Calderone and explore other instances within pop culture in which brave and influential people have straddled, dismantled or extremely adhered to typical gender identity and expression norms. This will be the first of their Gender Transcender series which aims to explore and discover the concept of gender through different and interesting topics.
Boybutante Benefit: Town and Gown’s “Dracula”

Start the Halloween season out right October 6th by coming to the Sneak Preview of Steven Dietz’s Dracula, presented by the Town & Gown players! Guaranteed to be a ghoulish good time, this event is also benefit for the Boybutante AIDS Foundation. The Fangtastic time starts at 7pm with a devilishly delicious pre-show reception provided by Mama’s Boy and The National. The show begins at 8pm. Tickets for this event are twenty dollars. Remember, all the money goes to a great cause.
South Star: Safe Schools Convening of the South

On Friday, October 7, 2011 Lambda Legal’s Southern Regional Office in Atlanta, GA will be hosting South STAR: Safe Schools Convening of the South. South Star will be a one-day convening of youth and adult leaders from the Southeast region. The purpose of South STAR is to discuss and strategize on the intersections of the safe schools movement for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) students, and the School to Prison Pipeline phenomena that disproportionately affects students of color. South Star aims to build alliances among youth and adult education leaders in the south, challenge the safe school and school push out communities to be accountable to both LGBT and youth of color students, and to push forth advocacy tools to make schools in the South safer to some of the most vulnerable students. Protest against Mark Driscoll’s “Love Life”

Saturday, October 8th. the conference lasts from 9am-4pm, but the UGAtheists will be there at 7 am.
Mark Driscoll is an extremely homophobic, sexist preacher and author who will be hosting a conference on “healthy Christian relationships” at the Classic Center. UGAtheists, Ally Outreach, and Lambda Alliance will be teaming up to protest this angry, ignorant man. This is not a strictly UGAtheist event. This event is for people of all beliefs and faiths who oppose sexism and homophobia. Women and Girl’s Conference

The conference brings together academics, activists, and community members to share expertise, strengthen networks, and strategize for positive social change in Georgia and beyond.This year is the 4th annual WAGG conference with the theme: Women and the Economic Crisis – Responding to Tough Times.

One of the oldest LGBT film festivals in the country, Atlanta’s Out on Film has expanded to eight days after one of its most successful years ever in 2010. In addition to more than 50 films from countries all over the world, the festival features films with such recognizable talents as Margaret Cho, Cheyenne Jackson, Julia Ormond, Ileana Douglas, Morgan Fairchild, Dolly Parton and singer Chely Wright. Among the other highlights of the festival are a world premiere of former Atlantan Christopher Hines’ “Man 2 Man: A Gay Man’s Guide to Finding Love” and the Atlanta debut of Margaret Cho’s “Cho Dependent,” filmed at The Tabernacle last December. Other films include (but are not limited to) “Judas Kiss” and “Jamie and Jesse Are Not Together.”

This year’s theme is “Gay In All Ways: Intersections of Identity.” Featuring keynote, comedian Diana Yanez, the conference will also discuss advocacy, self-care, and leadership skills which will allow for visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning issues in campus communities. Registration fee is $25 ($20 with a college student ID) and will include a continental breakfast, lunch, t-shirt, and access to all sessions. The deadline to register is October 14, 2011

Weekend of October7th-10th
Also, At the September 1st GLOBES meeting, GLOBES decided to coordinate finding drivers for those who want/need a ride for Atlanta Pride.At that point they had 8 requests for rides to Pride on Sunday October 9th and one potential driver. I don’t know if GLOBES is still coordinating drives, butif anyone is willing to volunteer to drive folks in for the parade, send out an email to wsm@uga.edu with the number of passengers your vehicle can accommodate. They will pass your email address along to potential riders and let individual drivers and riders work out the details of when and where to meet. I don’t know if GLOBES is still doing this, but it’s worth a shot!
