About Us
Lambda Alliance, first established in 1992 as the Athens Gay and Lesbian Association, came into being in order to meet the needs of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and ally (LGBTQA) students, faculty, and staff. We are now an officially recognized student organization at the University of Georgia, and our mission is to strengthen the LGBTQA community here on campus and in the larger Athens community.
We strive to:
- Create a safe, secure, and supportive environment for the LGBTQA community by increasing social awareness of LGBTQA presence and concerns
- Promote acts of public service
- Monitor political issues relevant to the LGBTQA community and strive to create political change to serve the LGBTQA community
- Provide outlets for social interaction among Lambda Alliance members and the LGBTQA community

I am gay, living in Chicago and researched Lambda Alliance because I had no idea what it was but had heard the name a lot. How did “lambda” become the name?

“Lambda” is the Greek letter “l” and it symbolizes enlightenment and light; a fitting name for an organization whose purpose includes educating the world in LGBTQ issues. The Gay Activist Alliance (GAA) adopted the symbol in the late 1960′s-early 1970′s. The Lambda was later appropriated as a pride symbol for the entire community instead of a particular organization, and is third in popularity only to the rainbow flag and the pink triangle as a pride symbol.
Hope that answers your question:)
